FAREWELL, FRANCES FARLEY
It was indeed a sad day to learn of former State Senator Frances Farley's
death late in January. Frances practiced truly genuine politics. While she
never minced her words, she also never entered a political discussion with
venom or
a desire to crush any-body. Rather, she entered every discussion with dignity
and grace and knew her stuff. She never expected to win a battle because she
never saw politics as
a battle-- politics was a process of living and it required
humor and decency, passion and compassion.
She got to live and practice her
politics true
discourse-- before this day of supposed internet democracy and the
normal shrillness that forever dominates today's
political lecturing.
On the Senate floor Frances Farley could stop
a rant and a rave with a simple well timed question, a polite request for
an honest answer, a bit of a stare, and decent, well thought out arguments.
Time after time, nearly 30 years back, many of us sat in the Senate gallery
and marveled, never realizing just how unique Frances Farley was!
